How the keyboard works

The Chordhaus keyboard is not a regular piano with fixed note labels (C, D, E, F…). It's a scale-degree keyboard — each white key represents a position (degree) within the key you've selected.

That means the chord shown on any given key depends on which key/scale is active. The position stays the same; the chord changes when you switch keys.

Example: scale set to C / Am

Now switch to D♯ / Cm (D♯ minor as the relative minor):

So a chord like "Cm" can appear on different keyboard positions depending on the scale you've picked. The key isn't telling you "this is the C key" — it's telling you "this is the third degree of your current scale, and right now that happens to be a C minor chord."

Why is it designed this way? Because as a songwriter, you usually think in terms of progressions like "I → V → vi → IV" (think most pop songs). The scale-degree layout lets you play these progressions in any key without memorising twelve different sets of chord names. Tap the same positions, change the key, and the entire keyboard re-tunes around you.

Visual hint: the I key (major root) and vi key (relative minor root) are highlighted with subtle coloured backgrounds — teal for the major root, pink for the minor root. This makes the tonal centre easy to spot at a glance.

Common questions

How do I save a chord progression?

In the sequencer (SEQ button on the top bar), tap SAVE after building your progression. Give it a name — you can load it back later from the LOAD button. Your saves stay on the device and survive app updates.

How do I export to my DAW?

Open the sequencer, tap MIDI for a MIDI file or WAV for fully-rendered audio (with effects). The iOS share sheet appears — pick AirDrop, Files, or your DAW of choice.

Why are some chord flavors slightly slow the first time?

Chordhaus loads only the most common chord flavors when a sound is picked. The first time you tap a less common flavor (like 13♯11 or m7♭5), it loads on demand — usually under a second. After that, it's instant.

Why does a sound download the first time I pick it?

To keep the app small, only Piano is included in the install. House Piano, Lo-Fi Rhodes, Dance Piano and Kalimba are free and download from the App Store the first time you select them (24–104 MB each). After that they work offline. If iOS runs low on storage it may remove a downloaded pack; it downloads again the next time you pick it.

What does Pro include?

Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks 4 and 8 bar sequences, unlimited saved jams (the free version keeps 3), WAV and MIDI export, and the effects rack. All sounds and chord flavors are free.

How do I restore my Pro purchase?

Open the sequencer, tap any locked Pro feature to open the Pro screen, and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought Pro with.

Can I customize a single key's chord?

Yes — tap the small slider icon at the top of any key to open the chord picker. Change the root, quality, or octave just for that key. Tap RESET to revert to the scale's default.

Will my settings transfer to a new device?

Currently settings and saved jams stay on the device they were created on. iCloud sync is something we're considering for a future update — let us know if it would be useful for you.
